Dropping someone at London Stansted Airport is straightforward, but the Express Set Down area now operates differently from many traditional airport forecourts. There are no barriers or payment machines: your number plate is recorded automatically and the charge has to be paid afterwards.

If you are flying into Stansted and have booked a minicabit cab instead, the process is different again. Rather than trying to find your driver outside in a busy pick-up zone, your driver meets you inside Arrivals with a name board before taking you to the vehicle.

How much is the Stansted drop-off charge?

The current Stansted Airport drop-off charge is £10 for a stay of up to 15 minutes in the Express Set Down area. If you remain for longer than 15 minutes, the charge increases to £28. The maximum permitted stay is 30 minutes. These charges came into effect on 19 March 2026.

Time in the Express Set Down area Charge
Up to 15 minutes £10
Longer than 15 minutes, up to 30 minutes £28
More than 30 minutes Not permitted – maximum stay is 30 minutes

The important point is that this is not a gradual per-minute increase. Once the vehicle stays beyond the initial 15-minute period, the £28 charge applies.

The charge applies each time a vehicle enters the Express Set Down area and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Where is the Stansted Express Set Down area?

The Express Set Down area is immediately outside the terminal building at London Stansted Airport and is designed for short passenger drop-offs.

Stansted has one passenger terminal, so unlike airports with several terminals there is no need to work out which terminal forecourt you need. Drivers should follow the airport signs for Express Set Down as they approach the terminal.

The area now operates using Automatic Number Plate Recognition. ANPR cameras record the vehicle registration when it enters, removing the need for an entry barrier or ticket. There are also no payment machines in the Express Set Down area.

Vehicles should not be left unattended. If you expect to require longer than the maximum time permitted in the Express Set Down area, another airport parking option should be used instead.

How do you pay the Stansted drop-off charge?

You can pay the Stansted drop-off charge online, through the airport’s automated phone service on 03450 175046, or automatically through an AutoPay account.

Payment needs to be completed by 23:59 hours on the next day after your visit. In other words, if you use the Express Set Down area on a Monday, the payment deadline is midnight on Tuesday.

There is an important difference from some other airport payment systems: you cannot simply stop at a barrier and pay as you leave. Stansted’s Express Set Down area is barrierless.

You also cannot make a normal one-off Express Set Down payment in advance. Payment is made after the vehicle has visited the area, although drivers who expect to use it regularly can set up AutoPay beforehand.

Stansted drop-off payment options

Payment method What you need to know
Online Pay after your visit through Stansted Airport’s payment portal
Automated phone Call 03450 175046
AutoPay Register your vehicle and payment card in advance so eligible visits are charged automatically
Cash or payment machine Not available in the Express Set Down area

If you are being dropped off by a pre-booked minicabit, you do not need to separately make the Stansted drop-off payment yourself. The Cab operator handles the airport drop-off charge as part of the fixed quoted price.

What happens if you do not pay the Stansted drop-off charge?

If the Express Set Down charge has not been paid by the deadline, a £100 Parking Charge Notice can be issued to the registered vehicle holder.

That Parking Charge Notice is reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days. If it remains unpaid beyond the relevant enforcement period, further action and additional costs may follow.

This makes the payment deadline particularly important. Because there is no barrier or payment machine to remind the driver before leaving London Stansted Airport, it is easy to drive away without completing the payment.

Setting up AutoPay can remove that manual step for people who use the Express Set Down area regularly.

Is there a free drop-off area at Stansted Airport?

Yes. Stansted’s Mid Stay car park provides a free alternative to the Express Set Down area for up to one hour. Passengers can then use the free shuttle bus between the Mid Stay car park and the terminal. Stansted states that the journey takes approximately seven minutes and that the shuttle operates 24 hours a day.

The Mid Stay car park postcode is CM24 1PZ. It is signposted from the airport approach roads and can be reached from the M11 via Junction 8a when approaching from London or Junction 8 when approaching from Cambridge and the north.

For someone who only wants to step out of the car at the terminal and head straight inside, the Express Set Down area provides the most direct route. The Mid Stay option requires additional time for the shuttle journey and handling luggage between the car park and terminal.

A pre-booked minicab provides another straightforward option: the passenger can be taken directly to the terminal while the Private Hire Operator manages the airport access arrangements.

Where do you get picked up at Stansted Airport?

If you have booked a Stansted taxi through minicabit, your driver will meet you inside the terminal in Arrivals rather than asking you to find them somewhere outside.

After you have landed, collected your luggage and passed through into Arrivals, look for your driver holding a name board. London Stansted Airport has a single terminal, which makes the meeting process simpler than at airports split across several terminal buildings.

Meet and Greet and 45 minutes of free waiting time are included with minicabit airport pickups. Your driver tracks your flight and, if it is delayed, adjusts the pickup to 30 minutes after the new landing time.

This means you do not need to leave the terminal and search for a vehicle immediately after clearing baggage reclaim. Meet your driver in Arrivals first, then continue together to the vehicle.

What if a friend or family member is picking you up?

For private pick-ups, Stansted advises drivers to use its Short Stay parking facilities or the Mid Stay car park rather than simply waiting on the airport road system. The Mid Stay option gives up to one hour free and is connected to the terminal by the approximately seven-minute shuttle.

If someone is collecting you, it is sensible for them to wait until you have landed and are progressing through Arrivals before timing their approach to the airport. This reduces the risk of unnecessary waiting charges.

What are the rules for Blue Badge holders?

Blue Badge holders are not automatically exempt from the Stansted Express Set Down charge. The normal charge still applies.

There is, however, additional flexibility where the passenger being dropped off or picked up holds a valid Blue Badge. If that passenger requires longer than 15 minutes, the driver should speak to an on-site traffic marshal in the Express Set Down area and show the passenger’s Blue Badge.

The airport’s terms specify that this additional time applies where the passenger holds the Blue Badge. It does not apply simply because the driver has a Blue Badge while collecting or dropping off somebody who does not.

Drivers should therefore speak to the traffic marshal before exceeding the normal allocated period rather than assuming additional time will be applied automatically.

What is the easiest way to manage a Stansted Airport cab drop-off?

Pre-booking your airport transfers means your journey to or from Stansted can be arranged in advance, with the airport drop-off or pickup process handled as part of the trip.

With minicabit, you can instantly compare fixed-price quotes from 1,000+ licensed Private Hire Operators and select based on price, vehicle type and customer ratings. Standard, Executive and Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles are among the available vehicle tiers, and journeys can be booked up to 12 months ahead.

For a Stansted Airport drop-off, the Cab operator handles the airport’s drop-off charge within the fixed quoted price. For a Stansted Airport pickup, Meet and Greet is included, with your driver meeting you inside Arrivals with a name board.

That makes the same booking process useful in both directions: direct terminal drop-off when you are flying out and a clearly arranged meeting point when you return.
