What is a minibus taxi?
A minibus taxi is the largest vehicle you can book through minicabit, and it works just like booking any other cab. Simply enter your pickup, your destination, select your cab pickup date and time, and number of passengers and bags. You’ll get a fixed price upfront when you book - no surprises, even when demand is high.
It’s worth knowing what a minibus taxi isn’t. It is not a self-drive hire, and it is not a vehicle and driver on standby for the day. Your driver takes you from your pickup point straight to your destination, exactly what most groups looking for minibus hire with a driver actually need.
How many passengers fit in a minibus taxi?
Minibus taxis carry 9 to 16 passengers, and that figure refers to passenger seats only. Private Hire Operators on the minicabit network list minibus vehicles within this range, so groups of any size up to 16 can travel together in one vehicle.
If your group is smaller, there are plenty of options below 9 passengers. A saloon suits up to four people with limited luggage, an estate adds extra boot space for the same number, and an MPV covers up to six. For groups of seven or eight, a 7 seater taxi or an 8 seater taxi is usually the better fit. Once you reach nine or more passengers, or at eight with a case each, the minibus is the vehicle that keeps everyone comfortably in one place, no splitting up, no juggling bags.
Luggage in a minibus taxi
When you enter your journey details, remember to add every item you are carrying, not just the number of passengers. Suitcases, boxes, ski gear, camping gear, pushchairs and folded wheelchairs all take up space that seats don’t account for, and your quote is built from what you enter.
If your group is close to the passenger limit and everyone has a large case, the vehicle needs to be sized for the luggage, not just the headcount. That way, everyone, and everything, fits comfortably.
Your driver may even be able to help with luggage on the day.
When a minibus taxi makes sense
Airport transfers with luggage.
Flying as a group usually means everyone arrives with a suitcase and hand luggage, exactly where a single pre-booked vehicle earns its place. minicabit covers all UK airports, letting you compare airport transfers for the whole group in one search instead of juggling several cars.
Events.
From weddings and matches to concerts and corporate days, a minibus taxi keeps everyone on the same schedule – arriving together and leaving together. Book both legs in one go and your return is confirmed at the same time as your outbound.
Family travel.
Extended families, multi-generation trips and school-holiday journeys often mean more people and more bags than one car can handle. Many of our Private Hire Operators offer child seats – just add the request when you book. Availability and cost depend on the Cab operator, so it’s best to book early.
Nights out.
Birthdays, hen and stag nights, Christmas parties – these are the nights when a fixed price booked in advance matters most. They’re also the times when finding a cab on the night can be hardest, so booking ahead keeps the fun stress-free.
How booking a minibus taxi works
Enter your pickup and destination, your cab pickup date and time, plus your passenger and luggage details. minicabit's award-winning comparison technology then shows quotes from Cab operators near both ends of your journey. Sometimes a firm based at your destination may offer a lower fare than one nearer your pickup. You can select by price, vehicle type, eco-friendliness or customer rating, and pay securely online or in the app. It’s the easiest way to get a group taxi quote before you book anything else.
You can pre-book up to 12 months ahead, which is ideal for weddings, holidays and events where the date is fixed well in advance. Return trips are booked in one transaction and the two legs can be up to 12 months apart. If plans change, simply update or cancel through minicabit - not the Cab operator - free of charge before the booking's cancellation cut-off time, clearly shown when you book.
Waiting time and airport pickups
Airport pickups include 45 minutes of free waiting time and Meet and Greet as standard, with your driver waiting in Arrivals. If your flight is delayed, your driver adjusts automatically, arriving 30 minutes after the new landing time, so even a late arrival with a group of twelve does not mean starting again. For non- airport pickups, you’ll still get 15 minutes of free waiting time, giving everyone that comfortable window to get ready and set off together.
Point to point, not day hire
minicabit books single journeys rather than hourly hire, and it is worth being clear about what that includes. You can add stops along the route when booking the trip, where the driver pauses briefly at each one - usually just a couple of minutes - rather than waiting while the group does something. There is also a wait and return option, where the same Cab operator waits up to 20 minutes at the drop-off point before bringing you back.
If your booked Cab operator can’t fulfil the journey, minicabit automatically reallocates it to another Cab operator at no extra cost to you. For group bookings - where one vehicle failing to arrive could strand everyone - that guarantee is the part worth reading twice.
