How to book a wheelchair accessible taxi
Booking a Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicle works exactly the same way as any other minicabit booking. There’s no separate phone line and no callback to wait around for.
- Enter your pickup and destination. Use a postcode, a town, or a point of interest such as an airport, rail station, hospital or stadium.
- Select your cab pickup date and time. You can pre-book up to 12 months ahead, and we recommend booking as far in advance as possible.
- Add a wheelchair to your items, along with any luggage. This is what tells the system which size and type of vehicle you’ll need for your trip.
- On the quotes page, tick Wheelchair Accessible. We’ll show you Cab operators with accessible vehicles.
- Select your quote based on price, car type, how eco-friendly it is, or the Cab operator's customer rating.
- On the payment page, use the Additional information box to say that you require a wheelchair accessible vehicle and to add anything your driver should know before your pickup.
- Pay securely by debit card, credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll find your Cab operator's contact details in your confirmation email. We recommend contacting them directly to talk through exactly what you need. If you need to make any changes to your pickup time and any cancellation, we handle this through your minicabit booking, not by the Cab operator. Our Help centre has how to book an accessible vehicle set out as a screen-by-screen guide if you would like to see it before you get started.
Allowing extra time on the day
If you think you’ll need longer than a standard pickup allows, build it into your booking rather than leaving it to chance. Airport pickups already come with 45 minutes of free waiting time and Meet and Greet inside the terminal, while all other pickups include 15 minutes. If disembarking and reaching the pickup point is likely to take you longer than that, set a later cab pickup time when you book, and note in the Additional information box that you have a disability so your Cab operator knows in advance.
What is a Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicle?
A Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicle, usually shortened to WAV, is a Private Hire Vehicle or taxi that’s been adapted so a wheelchair user can get in and travel without leaving their wheelchair. This usually means a ramp or a powered lift, a lowered floor, and anchor points to secure your wheelchair while the vehicle is moving.
Licensing authorities across Great Britain keep and publish a list of designated wheelchair-accessible taxis and Private Hire Vehicles in their area. Government guidance recommends a vehicle is included on that list only if a reference wheelchair - defined as 700mm wide, 1200mm long and 1350mm high - can enter, leave and travel in the passenger compartment in safety and reasonable comfort. If your wheelchair is larger than that, it is worth noting the dimensions in the ‘Additional information’ field when you book.
Your rights when you book a taxi as a disabled passenger
The Equality Act 2010 places duties on drivers, and those duties are worth knowing before you travel. In summary:
Any driver must accept the carriage of a disabled passenger and must not charge extra for doing so. A driver who does not hold an exemption must also give reasonable assistance (section 164A).
A driver of a designated wheelchair-accessible taxi or Private Hire Vehicle must carry a wheelchair user without charging extra (section 165).
On a pre-booked trip, the driver must help a disabled passenger identify and find the vehicle, at no extra charge, provided the driver has been told that assistance is needed (section 165A).
That last one matters most for minicabit bookings, since every trip booked on the platform is pre-booked. Just tell us what you need in the Additional information field when you book and it’ll reach your Cab operator in advance.
Drivers can be granted an exemption certificate by their Licensing Authority on medical or physical grounds, and must display it in the vehicle. You can read the full Department for Transport guidance on access to taxis and Private Hire Vehicles for disabled users on gov.uk.
How much does a wheelchair accessible taxi cost?
Like any other cab trip, what you pay depends on your route, the time of day and how far ahead you book. What won’t change is the price itself: minicabit quotes are fixed at the point of booking, so the fare you agree is the fare you pay. Ride-hailing apps are likely to apply surge pricing at busy times; a pre-booked fixed price is not exposed to it.
minicabit holds the UK’s largest database of Cab operator pricing and pull quotes from Cab operators near your pickup and near your destination, which often produces a cheaper price than booking direct. Under the Equality Act, a driver of a designated wheelchair-accessible vehicle cannot charge a wheelchair user more than any other passenger.
You can check an indicative price for any route with our taxi price calculator, or enter your journey in the form above to instantly compare quotes from 1,000+ licensed Private Hire Operators.
Booking a wheelchair accessible airport transfer
Accessible airport trips are one of the most common reasons people pre-book rather than take their chances on the day, and minicabit covers all UK airports. Airport pickups include Meet and Greet inside the terminal, so your driver will already be waiting for you in Arrivals rather than out at a rank, plus 45 minutes of free waiting time. All other pickups include 15 minutes. If your flight’s delayed, your driver is directed to arrive 30 minutes after the new landing time.
Book an accessible transfer for airport transfers anywhere in the UK, including Heathrow airport transfers, Gatwick airport taxi, Manchester airport taxi, Stansted airport transfer and Luton airport taxi.
Where you can book
minicabit covers 550+ UK towns and cities, all UK airports and 95% of UK stations, with 1,000+ licensed Private Hire Operators on the platform. Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles are available as a bookable tier alongside Standard, Executive and Luxury vehicles, though the number of adapted vehicles varies by area, so booking further ahead is likely to give you more choice.
Coverage is deepest in the large cities, where the licensed fleet is biggest and more Cab operators run adapted vehicles. If you are travelling in or out of the capital, start with our London taxi page; across the rest of England, see taxi Birmingham, Manchester taxi, Leeds taxi, Liverpool taxi and Bristol taxi.
In Scotland, accessible trips can be booked through our Edinburgh taxi and Glasgow taxi pages. For every other town and city on the platform, including long-distance trips between them, see our UK taxi coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. minicabit works with Cab operators around the country who have Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles, and they are bookable through the same form as any other trip alongside Standard, Executive and Luxury vehicles.
There are two steps. First, add a wheelchair to your items along with any luggage, which tells the system to work out the correct size and type of vehicle. Then, on the quotes page, tick the Wheelchair Accessible filter to return Cab operators with accessible vehicles, and select your quote.
We recommend booking as far in advance as possible, and you can pre-book up to 12 months ahead. The number of adapted vehicles in any area is smaller than the general fleet, so booking early is likely to give you more choice of price and vehicle, particularly for early-morning airport trips.
Add a note in the Additional information box on the payment page to say that you have a disability. If you are being picked up from an airport, it is also worth setting a later cab pickup time to allow for disembarking and reaching the pickup point. Airport bookings include 45 minutes of free waiting time; all other pickups include 15 minutes.
We recommend it. Your Cab operator's contact details are in the confirmation email you receive after booking, and letting them know what you need in advance is the surest way to make sure it is in place. Changes to your pickup time and any cancellation are still handled through your booking on minicabit.
Under section 165 of the Equality Act 2010, a driver of a designated wheelchair-accessible taxi or Private Hire Vehicle must carry a wheelchair user without making an additional charge for doing so. Separately, your minicabit price is fixed at booking and does not rise with demand.

Government guidance uses a reference wheelchair of 700mm wide, 1200mm long and 1350mm high when licensing authorities decide whether to designate a vehicle as wheelchair-accessible. Yes. Add every passenger travelling when you book, so the quotes you compare are for a vehicle with enough seats and space for your wheelchair and luggage.
Free cancellation applies before the booking's cancellation cut-off time, which is shown clearly when you book. Cancel through your booking on minicabit rather than by contacting the Cab operator directly, or your cancellation will not be processed.
